A bent bow is one of the most worthy tools a tree can become. The bow and arrow have been, until very recently, the hunting tool of choice for thousands of years around the world.

Wolf Tree’s Bow making class helped me make my first bow. I couldn’t believe that it started out as a section of a log and wound up as something that I’ll always treasure. The instructor was able to guide me along the entire process, always offering great advice and showing me new techniques. I guess you could say he inspired me, because I decided to make two more bows this past summer, and I am planning on continuing making them as my new favorite hobby.

The flat bow demonstrates a near perfect design for this region and the wood species available, and there is much wisdom in it.

In this 4 day intensive program we will focus on the ancient art of bow-making.  Participants will learn to craft their own bow out of a single piece of wood using traditional tools. Topics covered are harvesting, seasoning, bow design and layout, tool usage, tillering, and finish work. This is an excellent program for those interested in traditional archery and hunting.

The majority of the class will be spent tillering your bow. Tillering is the process of teaching the wood to bend in a beautiful arc so that it can serve as a fast, accurate, and durable bow.

We will be using hand tools and the physical work will be strenuous.

You will leave with class with a functional bow and a basic understanding of design and tillering.
