The Hunt: Reconnecting With Your Inner Fire

Program Details

Registration for The Hunt September 2026 is open now!

For thousands of years, humans have relied on skill, observation, and cooperation to hunt and provide food for their communities. Successful hunters developed an intimate understanding of the land, the animals that lived there, and the signs they left behind. Hunting asks us to cultivate patience, awareness, humility, and respect; qualities that foster a deep relationship with the natural world.

The Hunt is a three-day immersive backcountry experience designed for adults who want to develop practical hunting skills while deepening their understanding of wild landscapes and the animals that inhabit them. Set in the mountains of New Mexico, this hands-on course emphasizes experiential learning in the field. Participants will explore every stage of the hunt, including:

  • Igniting one’s relationship to intuition

  • Scouting and reading the landscape

  • Tracking and trailing game

  • Moving with wind, terrain, and natural cover

  • Hunting tools, tactics, and teamwork

  • Calling techniques

  • Backcountry navigation

  • Ethical shot placement

  • Blood trailing and game recovery

  • Skinning, quartering, and meat care

  • Establishing a rustic backcountry camp

  • And much more!

Working as a small group, you'll spend your days learning directly from the land, developing practical skills through observation, practice, and shared experience. This is an active, physically engaging course designed for those who are ready to immerse themselves in the realities and responsibilities of hunting in the backcountry.

Please Note: Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the course location and for providing their own food throughout the program. The class will take place at a primitive camping site in unit 50.

About the Instructors

Marc Reynolds and Neill Bovaird are experienced backcountry hunters with decades of combined field experience. Together, they offer participants the opportunity to explore the diverse ecosystems of New Mexico, study the behavior and ecology of big game animals, and develop the skills, judgment, and ethics required for successful low-technology hunting. Their approach emphasizes careful observation, deep connection to place, and cultivating a meaningful relationship with the landscapes and food sources that sustain us.
